Obsidian I is formed from solid walnut, selected for the depth and character revealed within the grain.
The slab retains its natural live edges, allowing the original outline of the tree to remain visible within the finished form.
Subtle voids and natural fissures are stabilised with dark resin, creating deeper tones that move quietly through the timber without overpowering it.
The contrast between pale sapwood and the darker heartwood produces a striking natural composition, emphasising the organic flow of the grain.
This piece forms part of the Obsidian pair, two tables created from closely related slabs.
Each table reveals a different expression of the same material, preserving the natural variation that existed within the tree.
The surface is finished with restraint, strengthening and protecting the timber while allowing its natural figure and texture to remain dominant.
Viewed from different angles, the grain patterns shift and deepen, while the refined bevelled edge keeps the form visually light despite the weight of the slab.
